Chapter 139: Decision?
Mr. Bennet then added.
"I understand that I am no match for you, however, I hope you could at least give me this little information, an insight perhaps, and satiate my curiosity so that I can leave in peace."
Draven gazed at him before abruptly smirking in the most mocking way ever.
This had Mr. Bennet blink his eyes in confusion. Something about that sudden snicker made the hairs on his skin rise. He did not like it at all. "Why...are you—"
"Do you think you ever left the starting point?" Draven asked.
"Huh?" Mr. Bennet was bewildered. "What do you mean?"
Draven’s smirk grew even more. "You spoke of how you were so close to solving the case, but I am sorry to burst your bubble. Mr. Bennet Pons, you never even started, talk of getting to the finish line. You were always at the starting line, but you just never realized it."
Mr. Bennet’s eyes flickered rapidly.
"What do you mean? W-what are you talking about?"
"Hmmm..." Draven scratched his head. "How do I briefly explain it to you? Honestly, I am sort of disappointed. They said that you were a prominent investigator, but how could you not realize?"
"Realize what?" Mr. Bennet was growing even more perplexed.
"Eh, that I was using and playing with you all along. I mean, I kind of made it obvious...or did I not?" Draven’s expression was emotionless.
Mr. Bennet balled his fist. "Using me? Playing with me?"
"Yes." Draven nodded. "First of all, wasn’t the case a bit too easy for you? Why didn’t you suspect that something was off?"
"A bit too easy? Off?" Mr. Bennet felt like he was losing his mind. He could not seem to wrap his head around Draven’s words.
"Well...don’t you know that in a situation where things are made to be hard but appear easy, it is obviously a trap?" Draven questioned. "Mostly it is."
"What made you think that I would have my men carry out a job and drop the evidence for you to see? Unless I am an idiot, I wouldn’t do that."
He shrugged. "But I kind of wanted to test you, and you failed miserably. You didn’t even try. It was a total failure on your part."
"It made me ponder that perhaps the cases you have solved in the past weren’t that big of a deal. But I guess you probably did not think something was off because the evidence was dropped quite far from the estate. I bet you judged that the culprit was stupid enough. I mean, most would drop evidence and run because they cannot handle the fear after they have committed a crime."
Mr. Bennet was not able to speak. He was just trembling on the spot. "Can you...can explain what you mean?"
"Okay." Draven agreed.
"There is indeed an easy way in which you could have solved the case. There is only one store that sells guns in our town, right?" he questioned.
Mr. Bennet nodded.
Draven continued, "You are also aware that with each purchase, your name and information will be written down. But of course, it is not just everyone that is able to possess a gun, definitely not a bazooka, therefore, my men, who carried out the job, needed to use my pass as well as my information to purchase one."
"What I am trying to say is that if you had gone to the store and asked for the details of all recent customers, you surely would have solved the case. After all, the buying of guns isn’t as frantic here."
"That was the only piece of evidence you needed. Don’t forget that the bazooka in your possession is a new one. If you had taken it to the store as well, it would have been confirmed."
Mr. Bennet widened his eyes. So, that was the reason! That was the reason the bazooka appeared new and yet to be fired. Not only that, but he was right! Only to the royals were guns easily sold.
He knew Draven was the culprit, why the fuck did he not think of going to the company?!
Draven snickered. "To solve a case sometimes, Mr. Pons, look at the path that is not given, not the one that is laid out for you." He shrugged. "I gave you two easy ways to solve it, but you see, one leads into a trap with no end, and the other helps you solve the case easily and under twenty-four hours at that."
"It had evidence, stronger than all that nonsense you presented. One of my workers who carried out the job has a special ability—an ability that I cannot tell you about."
"However, the point is that the man whom you wanted to apprehend no longer exists, so if you search the whole earth, you will never find him. That is why I said you never left the starting line. You were always there, moving in a circle."
Mr. Bennet’s eyes were dilated, and his mouth was slightly agape. He wanted to say something, but he was at a loss for words.
"I shall take my leave now." Draven turned around to walk off, but he halted at the thought of something.
Without glancing at Mr. Bennet, he said, "Oh, I remember you now."
Mr. Bennet lifted his head to look at him.
"You were the man who stood and watched me get pushed off the building by my father, am I wrong?" Draven inquired.
Mr. Bennet shook furiously on the spot but could not seem to answer.
Draven beamed emotionlessly and left without uttering another word.
Mr. Bennet stared at his disappearing figure and shouted, "Thank you! Thank you, your highness! You have made me realize something!"
Unlike what anyone would expect, this man appeared rather happy. For what reason? No one knew.
He turned around and hurried out of the mansion to meet Aedion, who was waiting for him by the car.
"Aedion!" He grabbed Aedion’s hand.
Aedion was perplexed. "W-what is going on with you, sir Bennet?"
"I have come to a decision!" Mr. Bennett replied.
"Decision?" Aedion arched his brow. "What decision?"
"I will give up my position as a prominent investigator. I do not deserve that title!" Mr. Bennet laughed as he got into the car.
Aedion widened his eyes. "Huh? What do you mean by such, Sir Bennet?" He sat in the driver’s seat and shut the door.
"Well, I will take my time to study more and hone my skills. I do not qualify for that title yet," Mr. Bennet clarified.
Aedion glanced at him. "Is it because you lost to the third prince?"
"It is much more than that. I learned something new today, Aedion. Something that I do not think you would understand." Mr. Bennet smiled. "I hope the next time I meet him, I will be able to stand face to face with him while I hold my head high in pride."
Aedion shook his head as he sighed and started the car. Mr. Bennett rested back and smiled to himself as though he had been hit by a sudden epiphany.
